After getting a sneak peek at Laura Osnes, Jeremy Jordan and more in a stageworthy preview of Bonnie & Clyde on October 3, Broadway fans are buzzing about this new musical. It's the second Broadway outing of the year for Wonderland composer Frank Wildhorn, whose musical reimagining of Alice in Wonderland closed on May 15 after only 33 regular performances at the Marquis Theatre. While coming back so soon with Bonnie & Clyde may seem like a shot at redemption, Wildhorn himself was philosophical about his Broadway return when we caught up with him at the press event.
“The thing is this: You do your best every time out, and these things take on the lives they’re going to take on,” Wildhorn said of his Broadway shows, which also include Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Civil War and Dracula. “All I can do is try and be honest to myself, have as much fun as I can possibly have, take care of my kids and write music that I want to share, and the rest will fall where it falls.”
Circumspect though he may be, Wildhorn admits that his Wonderland experience was “very sad and humbling for me, and it was a tough summer after that. I loved it very much and I thought the families that came to it had a great time. For whatever reason, it didn’t work. But if you’re going to be doing this for a long time, you’re going have both [success and failure]. So here we are again, and I’m so grateful to these producers for giving me a shot for my voice to be heard.”
Audiences will get a chance to hear Wildhorn's voice at the Schoenfeld Theatre, where Bonnie & Clyde begins previews on November 4.
